The concept of location

Date of issue: 2023-05-29 Author: Click:

Geographical location is a concept that has both connections and differences with geographical location. The word "location" is not only interpreted as the location in space, but also has two meanings: layout and areas connected for specific purposes. So the concept of location is not only location, but also closely related to the region, including the connotation of design. In the process of development, geography accepted the idea of location theory, produced the concept of geographical location, increased and emphasized the relationship between location and related geographical phenomena, and endowed various geographical elements with the concept of location.
The point, line and area features of a location have a clear position in the geographical coordinates. Such as river crossings and residential areas, coastline and traffic lines, river basins and urban attraction areas. An area is a combination of geographical entities composed of location elements such as points, lines, and faces. For example, Shanghai is located at the estuary of the Yangtze River, the main economic artery of China, and at the midpoint of the golden coastline of the coastal economically developed areas. Like an arrow on the bow, it connects vast areas of the Yangtze River basin internally, and radiates outward to the Pacific coast and all over the world, with a huge geographical advantage.
Fixed-point factor
The location theory quantitatively studies natural and social phenomena, mainly economic phenomena, in terms of space or geography. The factors that affect the location are either geographical factors or geographical phenomena, which can be summarized in six aspects:
Natural factors
Including natural conditions and natural resources. The impact on the industrial location can be divided into two categories: one is the universal natural conditions and resources, such as the atmosphere, land, raw materials, etc., which can be seen everywhere on the surface, and has little impact on the industrial location. The other is due to local natural conditions and resources and regional differences. For example, specific climatic zones, soil zones, biological zones and corresponding natural resources formed by zonal and non zonal laws; Mineral distribution related to the combination of internal and external forces of the earth; Water resources are restricted by the combination of rivers and landforms. Some local resources, such as the production environment of tropical rubber in China, and the distribution and reserves of some minerals, are still quite limited in distribution and quantity. Local natural factors have a very important impact on industrial site selection.
Transport factors
The location theory attaches great importance to traffic factors when analyzing the spatial relationship between regional geographical phenomena, because the combination of natural and economic factors living in different locations should be realized through traffic. The early agricultural location theory and industrial location theory mainly considered raw materials and freight. In the study of modern geographical location, we still pay attention to the influence of traffic factors.

(C) Aggregation factor
The agglomeration factors in the location theory include the concentration and dispersion of industries in the regional spatial layout. The spatial concentration of industries has the advantages of reducing transportation costs, grouping layout, facilitating cooperation, strengthening information exchange, expanding the scope of market services by using the existing market location, and reducing the total social costs by using the original urban municipal facilities. On the contrary, decentralization can avoid such problems as rising land prices, crowded sites, tight labor supply, serious pollution, and declining quality of life. Agglomeration is an important topic in the study of the rationality of regional structure.
Labor factor
Labor resources are the guarantee for the development of social production, but there are also regional differences. The quality and price of labor in different regions often vary greatly. The quantity, quality and geographical distribution of labor force are important factors that determine the industrial location.
(5) Market factors
The influence of market factors on location includes: ① the relative location and distance between the market and industry, ② the size of the market, that is, the capacity of its goods or services, and ③ the structure of the market, that is, the type of its goods or services. The latter two aspects usually constitute the hierarchical sequence of markets and cities.
VI Other factors
Other factors include behavior, technological progress, culture, time and so on. Among them, the influence of technological progress on location is constantly manifested with the development of history.
